Flash-based sites have been a craze since the past few years, and as Macromedia compiles more and more great features into Flash, we can only predict there will be more and more flash sites around the Internet. However, Flash based sites have been disputed to be bloated and unnecessary. Where exactly do we draw the line? Here’s a simple breakdown.

The good:

Interactivity

Flash’s Actionscript opens up a vast field of possibilities. Programmers and designers have used Flash to create interactve features ranging from very lively feedback forms to attractive Flash-based games. This whole new level of interactivity will always leave visitors coming back for more.

A standardized site

With Flash, you do not have to worry about cross-browser compatibility. No more woes over how a certain css code displays differently in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. When you position your site elements in Flash, they will always appear as they are as long as the user has Flash Player installed.

Better expression through animation

In Flash, one can make use of its animating features to convey a message in a much more efficient and effective way. Flash is a lightweight option for animation because it is vector based (and hence smaller file sizes) as opposed to real “movie files” that are raster based and hence much larger in size.

The bad and the ugly:

The Flash player

People have to download the Flash player in advance before they can view Flash movies, so by using Flash your visitor range will decrease considerably because not everyone will be willing to download the Flash player just to view your site. You’ll also have to put in additional work in redirecting the user to the Flash download page if he or she doesn’t have the player installed.

Site optimization

If your content was presented in Flash, most search engines wouldn’t be able to index your content. Hence, you will not be able to rank well in search engines and there will be less traffic heading to your site.

Loading time

Users have to wait longer than usual to load Flash content compared to regular text and images, and some visitors might just lose their patience and click the Back button. The longer your Flash takes to load, the more you risk losing visitors.

The best way to go is to use Flash only when you absolutely need the interactivity and motion that comes with it. Otherwise, use a mixture of Flash and HTML or use pure text if your site is purely to present simple textual and graphical information.

Hence, it is important to practise good design principles to make sure your site reaches out to the maximum number of visitors and sells to as many people as possible.

Make sure you have clear directions on the navigation of your website. The navigation menu should be uncluttered and concise so that visitors know how to navigate around your website without confusion.

Reduce the number of images on your website. They make your site load very slowly and more often than not they are very unnecessary. If you think any image is essential on your site, make sure you optimize them using image editing programs so that they have a minimum file size.

Keep your text paragraphs at a reasonable length. If a paragraph is too long, you should split it into seperate paragraphs so that the text blocks will not be too big. This is important because a block of text that is too large will deter visitors from reading your content.

Make sure your website complies to web standards at www.w3.org and make sure they are cross-browser compatible. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors.

Avoid using scripting languages on your site unless it is absolutely necessary. Use scripting languages to handle or manipulate data, not to create visual effects on your website. Heavy scripts will slow down the loading time of your site and even crash some browsers. Also, scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because of that.

Use CSS to style your page content because they save alot of work by styling all elements on your website in one go.

Here are seven important rules of thumb to observe to make sure your website performs well.

1) Avoid using splash pages

Splash pages are the first pages you see when you arrive at a website. They normally have a very beautiful image with words like “welcome” or “click here to enter”. In fact, they are just that — pretty vases with no real purpose. Do not let your visitors have a reason to click on the “back” button! Give them the value of your site up front without the splash page.

2) Do not use excessive banner advertisements

Even the least net savvy people have trained themselves to ignore banner advertisements so you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, provide more valueable content and weave relevant affiliate links into your content, and let your visitors feel that they want to buy instead of being pushed to buy.

3) Have a simple and clear navigation

You have to provide a simple and very straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. Stay away from complicated Flash based menus or multi-tiered dropdown menus. If your visitors don’t know how to navigate, they will leave your site.

4) Have a clear indication of where the user is

When visitors are deeply engrossed in browsing your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. That way, they will be able to browse relevant information or navigate to any section of the site easily. Don’t confuse your visitors because confusion means “abandon ship”!

5) Avoid using audio on your site

If your visitor is going to stay a long time at your site, reading your content, you will want to make sure they’re not annoyed by some audio looping on and on on your website. If you insist on adding audio, make sure they have some control over it — volume or muting controls would work fine.

Making videos or “videography” is a different from photography. When trying to capture pictures for a portrait or an event, you think of still shots.

Video opens whole scenes to be captured on film. But it also opens up a lot of opportunity for mistakes, unexpected results or interruptions and surprises. Not only do you have to continue to think about what makes a great shot, you now have sound and movement issues to factor in. So while videography is much more fun, it also can be a lot more work.

You are trying to find a middle ground when you start offering video as part of your services. You know that anybody can bring a camcorder and capture video streams. These days they can even do it with their phone. But you want to create a more professional shot than the high school kid with a camcorder. Then again, you are not trying to win an academy award here. So the level of professionalism has to be better than amateur so you can justify charging for it but it doesn’t have to be great art to be a good video that the customer will be happy with.

To accomplish this mix of perfectionism and compromise, a few tips from the pros who have already set up a video business can help a lot. Here are what many of the old pros tell us to focus on especially as we are getting our video business up and running…

The cornerstone advice that the pros give about making great video is plan ahead. The more you know about your shoot, the better equipped you are when you show up. If you are shooting a wedding, visit the chapel, perhaps the reception hall and plan where you will set up to capture the best images. Plan your routes as you move around so you can create a smooth flow that works with the wedding procession rather than interrupts it.

The same is true of any event. Even a sporting event, as spontaneous as that is, will offer some less traveled areas where you can position yourself to catch the action. If the best location for capturing video is above or a distance from the activity, then you know you will need to use zoom and focus differently than if you can be in the middle of the action. This helps you plan how to prepare your equipment and your crew who will be supporting the shoot.

Lighting is something that must be part of your preplanning so you have sufficient light so the action and facial reactions are easy to pick out on the video. Outdoors, keep the sun behind you if at all possible. Indoors, scout out how the existing lighting will look on video during the hours that you will be shooting. If they are not sufficient, you should get in there and set your lights in place well in advance of the event and work with the event organizers so they know your lights will be on during the event. The people who hired you want a great video so they will work with you. But you have to let them know what is going on.

A good video is a combination of stability of the camera and constant movement. So use a tripod to stabilize the shots when the video is being actively shot. But you have to be able to move the set up quickly to a new location. So make sure that your equipment is well maintained and that cameras, tripods and that all supplies are quickly accessible for field changes or repairs.

One of the most valuable insider tips is to shoot with the intention of editing. In that way, you will shoot more footage than you need, knowing you are going to edit it together later. You can go back and capture connecting video shots to smooth out the action and you don’t have to get upset if you get some bad footage. These and many other talents you will develop will take you to that level of professionalism you want to reach. And your customers will notice it too and come back for more of your talented videography.

It’s important that everyone who owns or uses a computer takes the time to make backups of any important files or programs they have which are resident on their computer systems. These programs should usually be backed up as well in order to prevent these computers from suffering from the adverse effects of what malware, spyware and other types of computer viruses can do. Rather than bearing the risks of losing your entire information making the necessary backup copies of your programs and information will easily protect you in the long run.

How can you lose your files?

Different occurrences can make you lose a whole lot of your computer programs and files. Your computer may get affected by a terrible virus or some spyware or malware that can do serious damage to your computer. Circumstances that are beyond your control may also affect the operation of your computer. An entire storm could make your computer malfunction if your computer isn’t protected against circumstances such as power surges. You could have the entire information on your computer wiped out and everything in it rendered unusable. Even a child can affect the operation of your computer. It is usually in your best interests to make backups of every file or program on your computer that is important in one way or the other to you.

What types of files should you backup?

If you’re concerned about what sort of programs and files you should be backing up, the answer is quite simple. Simply take the time out to back up any files and programs on your computer which you feel are important. Most people usually take files that relate to one form of financial information or the other as the most important. Other people consider project files, address books, pictures, software or music as equally important. To some people the scheduling software in their computers hold some important information that should be backed up as well.

How can you backup your computer files?

Backing up computer files can be done in a whole lot of ways. The simplest of these ways is usually to take the time out to back up your computer files every single week or every month depending on the frequency with which you make use of your computer. Some people burn the information that they need to backup on their CD-ROMs. People who have computers that have no CD-ROM drive can easily take the time out and purchase an external hard drive in order to store the information that they want to back up. External hard drives differ in terms of the available range of memory sizes. Some of these hard drives are so small that they can fit onto a key holder. If you need external hard drives, the prices you pay largely differ according to the requirements that you have. Small external hard drives can usually be purchased for prices that are as little as twenty dollars. Larger versions go for hundreds of dollars and more. The space and size requirements are ultimately what determine how much you pay. Most external hard drives can easily fit into your computer via the USB port.

Where should you keep your computer’s backup files?

When a computer has been backed up you should take the time out to keep the computer files in a location that is safe. You may also decide to get a different level of redundancy and backup your computer in multiple ways. You can then simply store these backups in different places. Prevention is always a whole lot better than curative measures.

We discuss a number of strategies and techniques for troubleshooting and recovering Windows NT, 2000, Vista and XP.

Driver or Service failing to load:

This type of failure is most common in windows after installing some device drivers or large applications which are much oriented to system services. These applications stop some services during their installations and sometimes fail to restore the services which cause this type of failure. In order to recover from this situation, we have to identify which driver installation causes this problem. This can be identified by using event viewer. The system log is written by the system during each critical task is carry on. This is accessed by control panel ->Administrator Tools -> Event viewer. Examine the application and system log for red signs. Then open the red signed and read the error report where, the driver which failed is reported. By knowing this driver uninstall the component associated to the driver which will rectify the problem.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD):

This is the most common deadly error of windows. It shows a blue screen when the error occurs and automatically restarts the system. If it is the first time of occurrence then the restart may help to get into the system again. But if it occurs at every time of the booting then there are two possibilities to recover. One is fixing the cause and another one is reinstalling the whole OS again.

The main errors for the BSOD are software errors, hardware errors both during windows operation, and installation errors, startup errors and intermittent errors.

Ways to recover from Blue Screen of Death:

If the BSOD error message shows any driver error try to get in to safe mode by pressing F8 during booting of windows. There it shows a menu with the options of safe mode with command prompt. Select it and try to uninstall the driver.

If there is no trace of which driver try to get into the system by pressing F8 during system booting and select Last known good configuration. This may rectify the problem.

Another way is launching system restore wizard in safe mode by pressing F8 during booting and select safe mode. There in Start -> Run type Msconfig.sys. In the system configuration utility select launch system Restore. There a wizard guides to selecting a restoration point. Select a best known date when the system worked fine and restore the system to the selected date. This is the most recommended way to get rid of the BSOD.

If you plugged in any new hardware just before the BSOD occurs means the hardware attached is incompatible with OS. So change the hardware or try to plug-in in alternative slots.

If the BSOD occurs even in the safe mode then just repair the OS using the setup CD.

Sometimes the system in panic and causes boot failure then repairing the windows helps the user to get back the system to working state

Sometimes windows shows the error report like

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup
using the original Setup CD-ROM.

Select ‘R’ at the first screen to start repair.

_________________

NTLDR is Missing
Press any key to restart
_________________

Invalid boot.ini
Press any key to restart

To repair the windows put the windows setup CD into the drive and reboot the system. Ensure that the system Boot sequence is set with CD ROM in first priority. After booting it press any key to boot it from CD. Then press F8 to skip ELUA license agreement. Then press R to repair the windows. The windows setup will repair the windows installation and restores all the system files and boot up files.

How a person can protect a computer from being attacked or taken over by computer viruses. These measures are simply measures that can be learnt and implemented almost as soon as you’re done reading the article. Virus protection is cheap; neglecting your responsibility to protect your computer from viruses is not.

Different steps and measures can be taken to ensure your protection and to make sure that your computer remains safe from computer viruses. By going through with these steps and measures you can easily protect yourself and save yourself from getting attacked by hackers.

Get yourself high-quality virus protection software

Lack of virus protection on your computer usually means that you have an open door policy towards any forms of malware that may be available over the internet. These forms of malware may include different things such as spyware, viruses, worms, adware and a whole lot of other programs that may eventually lead to your computer and files being destroyed and your personal information compromised. You may not only lose your information but you may end up losing the money and the funds in your bank account or credit card. You should consider weighing the small price for antivirus software against losing the time and money that you have in your accounts.

What is the best software for virus protection?

A lot of companies offer some great antivirus software products. Some of these brands include a lot of major names. These major names are products such as AVG, Bit Defender, Symantec’s Norton Antivirus, McAfee Virusscan, Panda Antivirus, Kaspersky, Trend PC-cillin and The Shield Pro.

One of these major software programs is The Shield Pro. It is an antivirus and software firewall program at the same time. The Shield Pro is an excellent option for people who aren’t that familiar with computers and any form of viruses. It is very easy to use as well as to install. You will get prompts that explain what the program is all about and how to use it easily. The program also scans your computer every single week and updates itself frequently too. It isn’t important that you remember how to run scans yourself as this software easily does this on its own. The Shield Pro also has a live help option that allows you to seek out help in case you get stuck on one particular area in the installation of the program. It doesn’t take as much space on your hard drive as is the case with other antivirus programs. It doesn’t slow down your system and yet provides you with the protection that you really need.

The importance of updating anti-virus software

Updating your anti-virus program is a very important task that should be carried out regularly. Anti-virus programs are only fully efficient when they are current. Most antivirus programs are usually provided with complete protection for an entire year free-of-charge. When your subscription is almost finished your antivirus software will still be functional but you will need to pay a fee in order to get additional updates and ensure that your antivirus software remains current. You can purchase the requisite protection for an entire year or more. By doing this you can make sure that your protection can cope with the latest attacks just as they are being released.
